Why They're Needed

Why Are Motor Chokes Needed?

Using long cables between the converter and the motor creates parasitic capacitance, which, combined with the high switching frequency of the power transistors (IGBTs), leads to a number of problems that a motor choke solves.

  • Reducing Capacitive Leakage CurrentsThe choke prevents the frequency converter from being overloaded, allowing it to deliver its rated current directly to the load.
  • Limiting the Rate of Voltage Rise (dV/dt)Protects the motor winding insulation from breakdown and premature aging by smoothing out voltage spikes.
  • Suppressing Electromagnetic Interference (EMI)Significantly reduces the level of interference radiated by the cable, both on the motor side and toward the supply network.
